Bridge Rehabilitation Across Time: Navigating Historical Standards to Contemporary Challenges in the Velika Tinja River, Bosnia and Herzegovina

This study focuses on the structural evaluation and rehabilitation considerations for a bridge spanning the Velika Tinja River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The investigation encompasses historical standards, such as the PTP-5 directive from 1947 to 1991, and contemporary Eurocodes. The analysis employs computational modeling using SAP 2000 software, incorporating plastic hinge models for nonlinear assessments. Comparative analyses reveal notable disparities in required reinforcement between historical and Eurocode standards, with an observed increase in demand when adhering to modern regulatory frameworks. A case study of the selected bridge, built in 1968, explores its design, material properties, and compliance with existing and updated standards. The study identifies critical deficiencies in load-bearing capacities, prompting the proposition of a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy. The rehabilitation involves augmenting the bridge’s load-carrying capacity through the addition of concrete layers, reinforcement, and modifications to pier dimensions. Pushover analyses confirm the improved structural performance of the rehabilitated pier, emphasizing increased load-bearing capacity and stiffness. The study underscores the necessity of reconciling historical standards with contemporary demands, especially considering the evolving landscape of traffic loads. This research contributes valuable insights into the structural assessment and rehabilitation of aging bridges, emphasizing the importance of adapting to evolving regulatory frameworks for enhanced safety and longevity.
