Heritage and Challenges of the Development of Official Cartography in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina started a new survey after the Second World War, after war destruction, and the destruction of cadastral documentation and maps. The old survey and geodetic maps, where the documentation was preserved, were still in use, but they could not satisfy the needs of the landowners and could not be used to exercise ownership rights. The slowness of the renewal of the survey required more radical measures, to speed up the process. For this reason, in 1974, a more extensive aerial photogrammetric survey of the territory was started, as well as the processing of aerial photogrammetric images in the Geodetic Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the working unit Cartography and Photogrammetry. That year is crucial for the development of official cartography in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and later in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The article will discuss the development of geodetic activity in B&H, administrative organizations, organizations that carried out applied geodesy and land topography, the development of educational institutions driven by the needs of the labor market, as well as a cross-section of official cartography in B&H and FB&H through the legislative framework and topographic products in the period from 1974 until 2024.
