Navigating Repatriation and Restitution: Jewish Survivors in Croatia in the Immediate Postwar Period

This chapter focuses on two parallel processes: repatriation and restitution. It will explore the correlation between citizenship and the possibility of restitution and the different reactions of survivors coping with the new political system in Yugoslavia, affected, among other things, by their experiences during the war and their political orientation. At the end of the immediate postwar period, the majority of survivors opted to leave Yugoslavia, mainly for the new world (prior to 1948) or the newly established State of Israel (1948–1952) in parallel with the process of nationalisation.
