Pedagogies of Survival: Intersections of Holocaust Rescue Efforts and Black Youth Rehabilitation

  • Abby Suzanne Gondek

摘要

Ernst Papanek was an Austrian-born Jewish child social worker and educator recognised for his work with refugees and Black youth during and after the Second World War. Papanek served as the director of the Wiltwyck School for Boys from 1949 to 1958. This chapter investigates the connections between the holistic care provided to Black ‘delinquent’ youth at Wiltwyck and Jewish Holocaust refugee youth in Europe. Papanek’s educational theories and praxis with these seemingly disparate groups of children overlapped, as did the networks of adults who served them.
