Tapping the Potential and Creating Value With Industry 4.0

Future industrial systems are now described by trendy terms like Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cyber-physical systems (CPS). Industry 4.0 and related technologies have a lot of potential benefits for manufacturing industries; however, the vast bulk of these developments are made by or for big businesses. However, there is a lack of comprehension on how these technologies are used in enterprises today. We are interested in finding out more about how Industry 4.0 technologies are being adopted by organizations. In this paper, we explore if manufacturing industries can be structured based on Industry 4.0 adoption trends and how these patterns allow the definition of certain industrial 4.0 technology configurations. Then, we discuss the pros and cons associated with the use of these technologies and uncover the potential human–machine conflicting areas. Such study helps us to understand what is necessary for the proper adoption of Industry 4.0.
