Study of BIM-GIS Integration for Metropolitan Governance: Case of Seismic Assessments of Buildings in Morocco

Urban governance in metropolises is a significant challenge due to urban sprawl, demographic growth, and anthropological challenges. Cities are exposed to numerous risks and natural disasters, including seismic hazards, which cause significant loss of life and material damage. Advanced technologies like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) offer advantages for monitoring resilience and sustainability in metropolises. These technologies allow a thorough understanding of the city and its built environment, particularly for seismic analysis and assessments. The major objective of our research is to analyse how far BIM and geospatial data are used to address seismic assessments. The methodology aimed to implement BIM and geospatial data to calculate building response during earthquake. As a case study, seismic response of two existing buildings in Rabat city was analysed using urban planning regulations, seismic data, and geospatial data. The seismic assessment was based on the Moroccan seismic code of 2011 (RPS2011) and used the equivalent lateral force method. The result of the study is a preliminary implementation of the BIM in seismic calculations to assess 3D building behavior during seismic events. This implementation reveals two principal limitations of seismic calculation software. To remedy these limitations, we propose an automated process to improve seismic assessments by BIM and GIS integration.
