Enhancing Indoor Air Quality Standards in Abu Dhabi Restaurants: Evaluation and Implications

Maintaining adequate indoor air quality in restaurants is of the utmost importance for providing a healthy and enjoyable working environment that benefits both restaurant employees and guests. This study aims to assess the air quality at a restaurant in Abu Dhabi, UAE, by monitoring temperature, humidity, air velocity, CO2 levels, as well as particular matters (PM10 and PM2.5) levels. The restaurant offers Indian barbecue style meals and has live grills on the tables. The survey findings revealed that the majority of respondents were unsatisfied with the restaurant’s temperature, humidity, and general IAQ, while being content with ventilation, green spaces, and sustainability requirements. However, the measured data revealed that the temperature and humidity levels were within ASHRAE standards, however the air velocity and CO2 levels exceeded ASHRAE standards. Furthermore, PM 2.5 and PM10 concentrations surpassed WHO guidelines. These findings indicate that the type of food served, as well as the utilization of natural and mechanical ventilation systems, have a significant impact on the restaurant’s total IAQ. By tackling indoor air quality concerns in restaurants, the study is expected to safeguard public health and improve the general welfare of Abu Dhabi's residents and guests. Additionally, it could have wider ramifications for comparable environments across the world, offering guidance and best practices for raising indoor air quality regulations in the hospitality sector.
