Forests and Global Change

This book outlines forest management approaches for integrating timber production and carbon retention in ecosystems to mitigate climatic warming. Carbon dynamics in boreal forest ecosystems are addressed in relation to the growth and development of trees under management, with impacts on carbon uptake, emissions, and storage in ecosystem structures. Furthermore, carbon dynamics affect the properties of forest ecosystems with high variability across different habitats, thus maintaining and increasing the species and genetic richness in natural and managed forests. There is a need to integrate different management objects to satisfy various needs, such as timber production, climatic warming mitigation, and forest-based biodiversity conservation, thus linking forest management and harvest with ecosystem carbon dynamics.
