This chapter examines how Roberts uses the past as a setting for his near-future, what Brian Aldiss refers to as “future-historic”. It gives a particular and distinctive voice to his science fiction, a voice that seems to owe more to HardyHardy, Thomas and KiplingKipling, Rudyard than it does to contemporary sf. Two aspects of his work in particular come to the fore in examining this voice: the socio-political, looking at the conservative impulse behind his work; and the technological, looking at the part that low-key, small-scale engineering contributes to his view of the world.
