Pavane was first published as a sequence of stories in the magazine Impulse between March and July 1966, with a further story appearing in New Worlds later that year. These were then assembled into a story cycle, with an additional Prologue and Coda, which first appeared in book form in 1968. This chapter examines the origins of the sequence, inspired by an overheard remark on a visit to Corfe. It considers how these stories were assembled and ordered, the role they played in the early career of Keith Roberts, and the initial and continuing response to the book.
