摘要

Biotextile collagen scaffolds play a crucial role in tissue engineering by providing physical support and signaling to cells for tissue regeneration. An ideal scaffold must create a microenvironment for cell growth, possess adequate mechanical properties, and serve as a reservoir for growth factors and cytokines while being replaceable by cells completely or partially to restore tissue architecture fully. Scaffold design, therefore, is essential in regulating cell phenotype and activities, such as migration, proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression. The requirements for repairing different tissues vary; load-bearing tissues like tendons need fibrous structures and robust mechanical strength, whereas other tissues may require a viscous gel to fill voids and promote tissue ingrowth and repair. Extracellular matrix (ECM) protein composition and structure also differ across tissues. For example, tendons and ligaments have hierarchically organized collagen bundles, while meniscus collagen fibers are radially and circumferentially aligned to meet specific mechanical functions. This chapter explores the designs and applications of biotextile collagen scaffolds tailored to meet the unique demands of various tissue types.
