To address the global issue of period poverty thoroughly, it is crucial to present scientific evidence. This review paper focuses on assessing the evidence presented by scholars concerning period poverty. The authors conducted searches on several databases including Scopus, Web of Science, Emerald Insight, and ScienceDirect. The search criteria used terms such as “menstrual management” OR “menstrual poverty” OR “sanitary” OR “hygiene” AND “intellectual” OR “scholars” OR “academics” AND “healthful” OR “hygienic” OR “salutary”. Quantitative studies were reviewed, and their quality was evaluated using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. The review highlights four essential aspects: access to sanitary products, menstrual knowledge and education, access to sanitary facilities, and the importance of privacy for changing sanitary pads. This study aims to provide researchers with accurate insights into the challenges posed by period poverty and to suggest effective strategies for addressing this issue, particularly among those experiencing this form of poverty. The authors conclude that further research into period poverty should focus on enhancing theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. They suggest that researchers and stakeholders should take proactive steps to develop solutions to combat period poverty within society based on these findings.
