Air Conditioning Condensate: A Potential Water Source for Irrigation

Recovery and reuse of condensate generated from air conditioning system is becoming crucial for promoting sustainability in building environments. This approach is gaining significance in combating water scarcity and rising water needs, particularly in regions with hot and humid climates. Air conditioning condensate is a result of the cooling process and is typically treated as wastewater. However, it holds promise for alternative uses such as irrigation, cleaning, and cooling towers. Normally, this water is either directed towards the sewage system or left to drip down the walls, giving them an untidy and worn-out appearance. This study represents the practical application of several investigations conducted over the previous six years. The author previously found that a two-ton air conditioning unit has the potential to retrieve over 2 L per hour. This investigation aimed to utilize the potential of air conditioning condensate for irrigation. To achieve this, a piping system was designed and installed to direct the condensate from the newly constructed house's air conditioning units to the garden yard. The amount condensation that could be collected from 2 and 3 tons of refrigeration air conditions have been verified and used to contribute to the irrigation of the garden. It effectively conveys that the utilization of condensate from air conditioning units can serve as a viable option and have a substantial impact in promoting environmentally friendly practices in smart cities.
