Do the Projects Exist in Reality?

This chapter not only provides an overview of various artificial project databases for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem but also classifies these projects based on well-known indicators that measure both network structure and resource scarcity. Additionally, alongside the multitude of artificial projects, an empirical project database is presented, containing real-world projects that can be used for research in scheduling, risk analysis, and project control. The chapter serves as an ideal starting point for any researcher interested in academic research in data-driven project management and in need of a diverse set of projects. This chapter is based on two summary articles. The article “An overview of project data for integrated project management and control,” published in Journal of Modern Project Management, provides an overview of the current artificial projects, while the article “Construction and evaluation framework for a real-life project database,” published in International Journal of Project Management, provides details about our empirical project database.
