We introduce the fundamentals of AI-enabled placement algorithms and discuss the philosophy behind Reinforcement Learning algorithms. We review state-of-the-art algorithms that use AI techniques or methods to solve placement optimization problems in 2D and 3D VLSI systems. We discuss a framework for the design and characterization of Reinforcement Learning algorithms. We identify specific needs for practical AI-enabled placement algorithms and key challenges that require innovative solutions.
