Restoration of Wetland Hydrology at Big Meadow Bog

In 2015 East Coast Aquatics (ECA) Inc developed, on behalf of the Eastern Mountain Avens Recovery Team, a hydrological restoration design for Big Meadow Bog, Brier Island, Nova Scotia. The restoration design was based on a review of available literature, extensive field surveys of the site, visits to comparable restoration sites in the United Kingdom and empirical data gathered from a ditch block trial conducted at Big Meadow Bog. ECA subsequently implemented the restoration design between 2016 and 2018, with a total of 123 ditch blocks being constructed, 3700 m of ditch being re-profiled as well as shrub and trees being cut across 34 ha of the bog. In 2023 ECA conducted a self-directed qualitative follow-up review to assess the effectiveness of hydrology restoration.
