Technology Transfer Offices

This chapter addresses the crucial role of universities in technology transfer and explores the concept and importance of a Technology Transfer Office (TTO). The functions performed by a TTO are highlighted, and various support programs aimed at facilitating the transfer process, such as patent contests, early-stage financing, entrepreneurship programs, and international technology collaborations, are presented. Additionally, the chapter provides six fundamental principles for the success of a TTO. These include the commitment of authorities, the establishment of clear rules and regulations governing intellectual property and the creation of spin-offs, the provision of incentives, the development of effective strategies and structures, fostering a culture of technology transfer, and showcasing success stories. The chapter also discusses strategies for strengthening a TTO and emphasizes the importance of people as a crucial element in achieving successful technology transfer. Furthermore, performance metrics are explored to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of a TTO’s activities.
