Commercialization of Science and Technology

This chapter examines the crucial relevance of investment in science and technology as fundamental pillars for the development and well-being of a nation. Various challenges associated with technology transfer are explored, including the need to establish a close link between the academic and business sectors, as well as adopting a long-term perspective. To illustrate the practical application of technology transfer, real cases of successful technology commercialization from different parts of the world are presented. In addition, the “technology transfer” ideation model is examined in detail, encompassing approaches such as “technology push,” “demand pull,” and “bootleg research.” Finally, a brief historical review of the development of technology transfer at the global level is carried out, highlighting milestones and significant advances in the field. This analysis allows us to understand the evolution of practices and policies in technology transfer, as well as identify lessons learned and potential areas for improvement.
