Rethinking Land Acquisition Law in the Era of Climate Change

Consequences brought by the land acquisition in light of climate change have been poorly highlighted both nationally and internationally. Establishing the interlink between climate change and land acquisition, this chapter examines both the existing legal landscape on land acquisition and climate change to find whether Bangladesh has adequate legal certainty and protection to deal with the climate challenges brought by land acquisition. The existing legal provisions regulating land acquisition failed to address challenges, which are ordinarily arising out of land acquisition, let alone considering some of pressing issue brought by the climate change. Finally, this chapter emphasizes having legal standards on land acquisition legislation in light of climate change specially focusing on land condition change and displacement.
