Climate Change Adaptation Initiatives in Bangladesh: Navigating Towards Resilience and Sustainability

Bangladesh, one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, faces severe climate change impacts despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. This chapter explores Bangladesh’s comprehensive climate change adaptation initiatives aimed at enhancing resilience and sustainability. It examines the country’s vulnerability to climate-induced hazards such as sea-level rise, floods, droughts, cyclones, and their socioeconomic impacts. Highlighting successful strategies, the chapter reviews key policies and actions including the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (MCPP), and the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP). These efforts demonstrate Bangladesh’s leadership in climate resilience through agricultural innovation, infrastructure development, disaster risk reduction, nature-based solutions, community-based adaptation, and international cooperation. The chapter also addresses challenges, including financial constraints, institutional capacity gaps, and social vulnerabilities, emphasising the need for continued international support and collaboration. By analysing Bangladesh’s adaptation measures and future plans, this chapter underscores the country’s commitment to combating climate change and advancing sustainable development, serving as a model for other climate-vulnerable developing countries.
