Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a widespread respiratory condition in children characterized by nasal inflammation triggered by exposure to allergens. It has a global prevalence and is often associated with other atopic diseases. Genetic factors influence the development of AR. It involves a complex immune response that produces allergen-specific IgE antibodies, resulting in the inflammation and activation of immune cells. Children with AR experienced nasal symptoms such as sneezing, itching, congestion, and rhinorrhea. These symptoms can significantly impact their daily activities, sleep, and cognitive function. Additionally, AR may manifest with extra-nasal symptoms, including itchy or watery eyes, allergic conjunctivitis, and dark circles under the eyes. Diagnosing AR in children involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, skin prick tests, and allergen-specific IgE testing that can identify the specific allergens causing the allergic reaction. Objective measures such as rhinomanometry, nasal nitric oxide measurement, nasal eosinophilia, and nasal provocation tests may be used in specific cases to provide further diagnostic information. The management of AR in children focuses on three main approaches: allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and allergen immunotherapy. Strategies to minimize exposure to allergens are essential in reducing symptoms. Pharmacotherapy options include intranasal corticosteroids, oral antihistamines, nasal antihistamines, and leukotriene receptor antagonists. In severe cases, short-term systemic corticosteroids may be prescribed. Allergen immunotherapy, administered through injections or sublingual tablets, can help desensitize children to specific allergens and provide long-term relief. Early recognition, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management are crucial for effectively managing AR in children, improving their quality of life, and preventing complications. By combining allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and immunotherapy, healthcare professionals can successfully control AR symptoms in children.
