Severe Asthma in the Pediatric Patient

Severe asthma is a rare, yet health-resource consuming and potentially lethal condition among children and adolescents. The severe asthma definition currently includes three different entities, according to the presence of concomitant addressable treatable traits (difficult-to-treat-asthma), not addressable or not identifiable complex treatable traits (refractory difficult asthma) or the absence of coexisting modifiable factors (the real severe therapy-resistant asthma, STRA). Compared to evidence among asthmatic adults, STRA has unique features in pediatrics. Therefore, this chapter will focus on severe asthma definition, classification, proper diagnosis, and management in pediatrics, with a brief overview of novel biomarkers and imaging techniques.
