Why Archaeology Matters? Digging Up Archaeology’s Role in Modern Societies: The ONLAAH: Online Learning on African Archaeology and Heritage Project. Engaging a New Generation of Researchers and the Public into African Archaeology

Archaeology is the science that studies what our human ancestors left behind and explores our capacity to adapt to our changing environment through time. It provides insights into the changes humans have faced and illustrates how resilience has been a defining characteristic of our species. Through the study of past human behavior and adaptation, archaeology offers possibilities to address contemporary dilemmas. The large chronological perspective provided by archaeology gives hope when facing challenging situations, as history is filled with examples of resilience and overcoming hardships. While the scientific value of archaeology is undeniable, how can we as archaeologists make our knowledge and voices heard amidst the cacophony of modern life? How can we make the discipline more approachable and give voice to the communities we work with? This chapter presents the ONLAAH (Online Learning on African Archaeology and Heritage) project, which responds to these challenges using new technologies and innovative communication methods, such as an online course and a podcast. Since its launch on the UAB-Coursera platform in May 2023, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) ‘Archaeology and Heritage of Africa’ has attracted over 1800 students worldwide, demonstrating the significant impact and reach of accessible, high-quality educational content in African archaeology and heritage. Notably, the use of the MOOC in the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) Unearth program underscores the MOOC’s commitment to practical application and community engagement, connecting digital learning with real-world archaeological practices and enhancing the educational experience through direct fieldwork opportunities.
