The intersection of heritage protection and Indigenous knowledge in Africa is explored in this chapter because of the different objectives’ heritage protection and Indigenous knowledge protection serve in terms of access and restrictions thereof. In particular, the ramifications of the ownership or lack thereof of heritage objects by Indigenous communities of origin is provided for context by an examination of the affirmation of the ownership and management of the Benin Bronzes.
