This chapter examines the relationship between Indigenous and popular music and notes that orality and materiality as the principal feature of Africa’s Indigenous music systems is important in understanding how members of Indigenous communities and citizens of states of Indigenous communities have engaged in wholesome appropriation rather than foreigners of Indigenous musical styles to the point that it appears difficult to differentiate the Indigenous from the popular. Interfaces of Indigenous and popular music in African states provide much needed context for this chapter.
