The Golden Pipe: An Archaeology of Historical Ceramic Cachimbos in the Brazilian Amazon

The presence of ceramic pipes from the precolonial to postcolonial periods in the Amazon region is extensively documented, ranging from nineteenth-century missionary chronicles to modern scientific collections. These artifacts, associated with the art of smoking, are found in various research institutions in Brazil and abroad. Early studies on ceramic pipes, highlighted their artistic significance but often lacked cultural and stylistic comparisons. A focal point of this research is the analysis of ceramic pipes found at the Murutucu sugar cane mill site. The Murutucu pipes exhibit a unique blend of indigenous, European, and African influences, reflecting the complex cultural interactions during the postcolonial period. These artifacts provide valuable insights into the daily lives and cultural practices of the enslaved populations in the Amazon.
