Designing, Implementing, and Testing AI-Oriented Smart Home Applications: Challenges and Best Practices

Smart homes represent lifestyles that enhance the daily lives of homeowners compared to non-smart homes, facilitating and improving the quality of life of the general residents. While home automation is already a reality, ongoing studies are being conducted to integrate smart scenes and rules. This paper presents an exploratory study on smart home development in a large Brazilian software company. Through semi-structured interviews, we investigate the challenges practitioners face in developing smart homes. In addition, we propose a set of best practices based on the strategies practitioners adopt to overcome the challenges.
