Basque Public Television as an Educational Agent During the Lockdown of the Pandemic
摘要
The closure of schools in spring 2020 was a challenge for the education systems all over the world. Consequently, many public television channels tried to balance out the lack of in-person classes by broadcasting educational programs (school-tv). In the Basque Country, where education system lies on the basis of the linguistic policy for revitalisation, the lockdown was a challenge not only for the formal socialisationSocialisation of children but also for the linguistic policy. That is why it seems relevant to analyse how the Basque public television reacted to the schools’ closure, for a better understanding of the role that media could play in the linguistic policy. In this chapter, after explaining the broad lines of the policy of revitalisation of Basque and the reality of the Basque education system from the point of view of the language, the response of the different public televisions will be analysed. Audience data will be presented to see the reach of school-tv broadcast, and to provide evidence for an evaluation of the impact of the lockdown on the linguistic policy. Finally, some conclusions will be drawn.
