The introductory chapter of the present volume intends to act as a bridge between the existing scholarship on minority language media and the contributions brought to the fore here. As a field of studies, minority language media has developed through landmark edited volumes such as Cormack and Hourigan (Minority Language Media. Concepts, Critiques and Case Studies, Multilingual Matters, Clevedon, Buffalo, Toronto, 2007) and Jones and Uribe-Jongbloed (Social Media and Minority Languages: Convergence and the Creative Industries, Multilingual Matters, 2013), each embedded in the technological changes of its time. The present volume is therefore rooted in a different era, one that has seen shifts of a technological and habitual nature, recently exemplified by an unprecedented global health pandemic with profound impact on individuals’ behaviour and interaction with media. Therefore, the continuing relevance of the core concepts such as the purpose and challenges of minority language media which were developed in earlier volumes, is intended to be assessed by this contribution. Moreover, the introduction seeks to demonstrate the necessity for a geographic expansion in this field of study, which has largely been focused on Western European cases to date. After these initial considerations, the introduction then outlines the 14 chapters across the 3 parts this volume consists of. Part 1 offers five chapters of a conceptual or regulatory nature, initially on a broad European level and then specific cases in SpainSpain and North Macedonia. Part 2 is concerned with online media formats acting as digital tools connecting communities, featuring case studies from indigenous communities in the Americas and Europe, as well as Irish and Galician. Finally, part 3 offers three chapters on journalistic practices from minority language settings in RomaniaRomania, Finland and Denmark. The introductory chapter, therefore, sets the scene for the volume, justifies the thematic clustering of three parts and explains the value the volume intends to bring—expanding the field of study in both temporal and geographical dimensions.
