This paper aims to define the ‘imaginary cube’ as a diagrammatic operation in architectural design theory. First, it confirms Arata Isozaki’s theory of the cube and discusses the cube as an idea in architectural theory [5]. Next, we take Colin Rowe’s discussion of transparency as a subject and confirm his argument between ‘real transparency’ and ‘imaginary transparency’ [14]. Then we define the ‘imaginary cube’ as an extension of the concept of transparency. Case studies of the ‘real cube’ and the ‘imaginary cube’ are then presented to confirm how the cube appears and to clarify the relationship between the designer’s intention and the cube. Finally, based on the above, the author introduces his own project as a study of design methods using the cube.
