From Representation Language to the 3D World: A Journey Towards 3D Printing - a Case Study

This study examines the teaching-learning process in the units of Descriptive Geometry, Technical Drawing, and 3D Modeling, as well as their application in 3D printing, within the context of design education. The progression of students throughout these units is analyzed, from the conceptualization of three-dimensionality to the completion of practical projects. A case study at the Metropolitan Autonomous University campus Cuajimalpa is presented, where students develop skills to understand, conceptualize, and represent three-dimensional objects using both manual techniques and digital tools. The study highlights the importance of integrating concepts from descriptive geometry and technical drawing into 3D modeling, providing students with a deeper understanding of geometric principles and their application in design. It demonstrates how students apply this knowledge in practical projects, such as modeling and 3D printing complex objects, showcasing technical skills and creativity in solving design problems. It is concluded that the sequential and progressive teaching of Descriptive Geometry, Technical Drawing, and 3D Modeling units provides students with a solid foundation to tackle challenges in the field of architecture, design, and engineering, preparing them for the professional world and fostering innovation in the field of three-dimensional design.
