Let’s Think About It! Metacognition of Clinical Thinking

  • Francesco Brigo

摘要

Clinical medicine predominantly involves cognitive processes, and understanding human cognition deeply is crucial for refining clinical thinking, improving diagnostic skills, recognizing and mitigating biases, and making sound decisions. Dual-process theories provide insight into how physicians engage with, interpret, and draw conclusions from clinical information. System 1 thinking is often referred to as the “gut feeling” mode of thought because it relies on mental shortcuts called heuristics to make rapid and efficient decisions. When faced with new, complex, or demanding information, System 2 thinking comes into play. Both systems function optimally when integrated, leveraging their respective strengths and compensating for their weaknesses in a coordinated manner. Rather than viewing them as opposing forces, they should be seen as complementary elements of human cognition.
