Higher Education as a Proxy for Technology and Its Impact on Chronic and Life-Threatening Illnesses in MENA Countries

This study investigates the relationship between higher education and mortality rates attributed to chronic and fatal diseases across MENA countries from 2000 to 2018. Employing rigorous panel econometric methods, including fixed-effects, Robust Weighted Least Squares (RWLS), and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS), our analysis reveals a robust negative correlation between higher educational attainment and reduced mortality rates. Our research focuses on prevalent diseases such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, diabetes, and Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRD). The results show that individuals with higher education levels adopt healthier lifestyles and access healthcare services more effectively, leading to significantly lower mortality rates from these chronic conditions. Additionally, the study underscores the socioeconomic benefits of education, such as improved employment opportunities and income levels, which further enhance health outcomes. We emphasize the need for policy interventions that prioritize educational investments to mitigate mortality risks, enhance health literacy, and promote public health in the MENA region. Overall, our findings advocate for tailored educational programs and public health strategies that increase access to education, particularly in underserved communities, to foster a health-conscious population and reduce the burden of chronic and fatal diseases in the MENA region.
