Decoding the Periphery Puzzle
摘要
In this chapter, we delve into the most common limitations in defining “peripherality”, a fuzzy terminology that lacks a clear definition and taxonomy across disciplines, over time, and often within the same academic field. We propose a conceptual framework, identified as the “3-Ds model”, which operationalizes a multifaceted definition of peripheries. Embracing multidisciplinary lenses, we clarify the role of different narratives of innovation and how they influence academic research on peripheries. By the end of the chapter, we organize significant insights about the factors that shape innovation capabilities and strategies of local firms operating in peripheral regions.
