The Mountain Ecosystems of Cameroon: Bleak or Promising Future in the Face of Anthropogenic and Climatic Threats?

The mountain ecosystems of Cameroon, spanning the Cameroon highlands and the Mandara mountains, are a biodiversity-rich landscape. These high-altitude regions, including the renowned Mount Cameroon and Mount Oku, Mount Kupe and Muanenguba, Mount Bamboutos, Mount Nlonako, and the Mandara mountains are crucial habitats for numerous endemic species and play a vital role in regional climate regulation, water resource management, and soil conservation. However, these ecosystems are currently facing a range of anthropogenic pressures and environmental challenges that cast uncertainty over their future viability. Deforestation, driven by agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development, is one of the primary threats to Cameroon’s mountain ecosystems. This loss of forest cover not only diminishes habitat availability for flora and fauna but also exacerbates soil erosion and disrupts local water cycles. Climate change further complicates the situation by altering temperature and precipitation patterns, which leads to shifts in species distribution, reduced agricultural yields, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events. There are emerging conservation and sustainable management strategies that offer a glimmer of hope. Initiatives aimed at promoting agroforestry, community-based conservation, and ecotourism are gaining traction and hold potential for mitigating some of the adverse effects. Efforts to strengthen legal frameworks and enhance local community engagement in environmental stewardship are also crucial in fostering resilience within these ecosystems. While the mountain ecosystems of Cameroon are currently besieged by significant threats such as deforestation and climate change that cast a shadow over their future, there are promising developments and strategies that could help secure their sustainability. The path forward will require a concerted effort from policymakers, conservationists, and local communities to balance developmental needs with environmental preservation. The outcome will hinge on the effectiveness of these initiatives and the collective will to safeguard these vital ecosystems for future generations.
