The Congo Basin is home to the second largest intact forest expanse in the world after the Amazon rainforest in South America. Commonly referred to as the “Lungs of the World,” the Congo Basin rainforest is vital for human survival on planet earth particularly as climate change adversities are ravaging different parts of the world. Community forestry is one of the strategies adopted by Congo Basin countries to ensure the protection of its rainforest while aiding in the fight against climate change. So far, little has been done to understand the role of community forestry in the fight against climate change in the Congo Basin. This paper therefore seeks to fill this research gap. Findings reveal that all countries in the Congo Basin have adopted community forestry as a sustainable strategy to fight climate change with the most prominent adopters being Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo (Congo Brazzaville), and the Central African Republic. Community forestry mainly contributes to the fight against climate change in the Congo Basin through carbon sequestration, the REDD+ process, as well as the provision of different products and services to local communities which reduce pressure on the pristine rainforest. There is however the need for a better policy, legal and institutional framework governing community forestry in the Congo Basin as this will go a long way to ensure the sustainability of community forests thereby contributing significantly to the fight against climate change.

摘要
