Food (In)security, Land (Mis)management, and Climate Chaos: The Daunting Trilemma for Africa

Food, land, and climate change have become a contentious debate among academia, international organizations, and policymakers due to the trio’s interlacing effects on human well-being and survival. In Africa, the situation is desperate, and how the continent copes with this emerging problem remains a critical area of research. Using a secondary data research approach, this study aimed to understand the interplay between climate change, food security, and land management. The investigation involved compiling data from various sources, including journal publications and Internet sources, following a sequence of data identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion/exclusion; this methodology was ideal for answering the research questions. The study discovered that while climate change exists, its impact on food security and land management remains a constant trilemma for the continent. Large parts of Africa experience a rather hot and dry climate, becoming even more extreme and unpredictable due to climate change. Besides, fertile soil disappears yearly due to desertification, as 12 million hectares of productive land become barren annually due to desertification and drought alone. Moreover, the study underlined the prospects, such as climate-smart agriculture practices, which can enhance the sustainable interplay between land management, food security, and climate change challenges. Nevertheless, the paper aimed to contribute to Africa’s sustainable socio-economic transformation by addressing the food-land-climate chaos nexus. The results will be valuable to the evidence-informed policies and interventions addressing the complex relationship between food, land, and climate chaos. Lastly, the results contribute to SDGs Goal 2—Zero Hunger, Goal 3—Good Health and Well-being, 11—Sustainable Cities and Communities, and 13—Climate Action.
