The interlinkages between land use, climate change, and renewable energy are complex and represent both challenges and opportunities for national efforts toward sustainability. In West Africa, The Gambia has been significantly impacted by progressing climate change, and rapid population growth and urbanization have been also changing patterns of land use in the country which is among the most densely populated in Africa. Changes in weather patterns are increasingly challenging the country’s agricultural production, which may especially benefit from the use of renewable energy to increase resilience. In this context, by means of a bibliometric analysis, this paper aims to investigate the interlinkages between land use, climate change, and renewable energy in The Gambia. In addition to a broader overview of the literature around these topics in Africa, the findings focus on the implications of land use change on climate, and the potential role played by renewable energy, aiming at both, mitigating carbon emissions and enhancing the sector’s resilience. The study highlights the critical need for integrated climate-smart land use strategies in The Gambia to mitigate the impacts of climate change, particularly on agricultural productivity and local livelihoods. It underscores the inadequacies in current land use policies and legal frameworks, suggesting that policy revisions, enhanced governance, and capacity building are essential. This comprehensive examination underscores the critical role of harmonizing land use and energy policies in adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable development in The Gambia. The scientific value of the paper lies in its comprehensive analysis of the interconnections between land use, climate change, and renewable energy in the country, offering strategic insights for policy reform and climate-resilient development, particularly in the agricultural sector.
