Use of Lasers in Acne Vulgaris

Acne is a highly prevalent dermatological condition that can significantly affect the quality of life of those affected. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent scarring, making it crucial to seek necessary treatment. Treatment options for acne include oral and topical medications, acne extraction, peeling, anti-inflammatory injections, and phototherapy. Combination treatments are often necessary based on the severity of acne. Physical modalities or phototherapy is an important alternative for individuals with contraindications to oral medications, such as growing children, pregnancy, and preexisting medical comorbidities. Phototherapy, including blue- and red-light therapy, has demonstrated efficacy in acne treatment. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involving the use of photosensitizing agents in combination with lasers, intense pulsed light (IPL), or light-emitting diodes (LED) devices with specific wavelengths has also been successful. Laser treatments utilizing various wavelengths (532, 585, 595, 1064, 1320, 1450, 1540, 1550 nm) have proven effective and are widely employed in clinical practice. The choice of treatment modality depends on the individual’s clinical presentation, necessitating tailored approaches for optimal outcomes.
