Architectural Investigation of the Adaptive Reuse Potential of the Multi-Storey Car Parking Structure for Urban Food Production: A Case Study

The present study investigates the adaptive reuse potential of the London Road Car Park in Brighton & Hove (UK) for controlled environment agriculture from an architectural perspective. Architectural analysis is applied to investigate the opportunities and limitations of repurposing the building for food production. The results show that the upcycling potential of London Road Car Park lies in the flexibility, modularity, and accessibility of the building, while structural conditions and fire safety represent constraints that need to be further investigated. Based on the explored individual features of the multi-storey garage, a speculative design approach is applied to conceptualise an initial design scenario of a mixed-use building that encompasses vertically multiplied hydroponic units and façade farms. The significant organisational and functional differences between the use of the past and those proposed for the future trigger the need to transform the existing architectural type to accommodate a novel function. In this context, urban food production becomes the driving force that gives the cultural heritage building significance beyond its original purpose.
