Public Health Informatics: An Overview
摘要
Public health informatics (PHI) is a specialized area that is emerging within the broader field of health informatics. In simple terms, PHI refers to the use of informatics in the public health to focus on preventing and promoting health at a population level. Public health informatics plays a crucial role in improving population health outcomes by providing information that aids in decision-making. Public health informatics benefits healthcare seekers, providers, and health institutions as digitizing the health system improves efficiency and quality of care. The use of information systems in public health contributes to enhancing population health outcomes through improving the access, quality, and safety of public health services. It also helps to reduce health disparities and lowers the cost of healthcare. It supports early preparedness and response for public health surveillance, helps to develop resilient, efficient, and responsive health systems. Public health informatics is more helpful in developing countries where resources and infrastructure are limited. Thus, the development and adoption of public health information systems require careful and rigorous approaches to ensure sustainability. This chapter consists of the concepts, scope, role and impact of public health informatics in advancing the health system to respond public health challenges.
