Future Scenario for Sustainable Carbon Neutral Urban Planning with SMR

Rising temperatures caused by climate change are limiting the potential of cities around the world. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels, one of the causes of climate change, is essential. A way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels is to use renewable energy, but in reality, the efficiency is still very low. In other words, nuclear energy has become more important. The Small Modular Reactor (SMR), a next-generation nuclear power plant, is in the spotlight as world leaders agreed to expand nuclear energy production at The 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Against this backdrop, the study aims to review existing research data on SMR and future technologies that can realize carbon neutrality. Using a case study approach, this paper selects a site in South Korea and analyzes sustainable future city scenarios using SMR and eco-friendly energy. The Urban planning for the site includes additional future technologies, such as the Transparent Solar Panel (TSP), Smart Pavement, and Smart Factory. This paper proposes urban planning scenarios involving SMR for climate change response, providing a theoretical basis and references for suggesting future carbon-neutral sustainable urban development directions.
