Reimagining Urban Islands- Transformative Strategies for Plac Centralny, Krakow and Similar Traffic-Encircled Public Squares

Urban public spaces are increasingly vital, shaped by the intricate interplay of social and individual needs that drive their design and functionality. This study investigates the multifaceted challenges faced by public spaces entirely surrounded by traffic, with a specific focus on Plac Centralny in Krakow, Poland. As a large heritage square, this area exemplifies a non-functional public space requiring various transformative strategies for its revitalization. Aligning with UN SDG Target 11.7, the study conducts a quality assessment centered on accessibility, environmental sustainability, health, safety and socio-economic vibrancy. The research employs a comprehensive methodology combining desk-based research, analysis of contemporary global case studies, and a comprehensive Public-Space Site-Specific Assessment tool developed by UN-Habitat. The findings present a quality assessment and demonstrate alignment with SDG Target 11.7. Based on these insights, the research provides a list of strategic recommendations informed by both global best practices and Plac Centralny’s specific context. These recommendations are categorized into minimal, medium and major interventions, providing a practical and actionable roadmap for the revitalization of Plac Centralny and similar urban islands encircled by traffic.
