Methodological Procedure for Preservation and Restoration of Kozija Ćuprija: A Study on Sustainability in Stone Masonry Arch Bridges

This study investigates the historical and structural aspects of the Imperial Bosnian Road (Stambolska džada), focusing on the analysis of Kozija ćuprija, a significant stone bridge within the Bentbaš monument complex. The structure experienced alterations over time, and its restoration is justified, given its historical importance. It is important to note that this infrastructure object originated during the Ottoman period and continues to exist in its original state as a representative of this historical era. Its original condition has been altered by a subsequent historical layer, which adapted the infrastructure to accommodate a newly constructed road network by adjusting the road levels and bridge lanes through elevation. This intervention did not compromise the authenticity of the bridge but did result in partial modifications to its appearance. The study also addresses the challenges of graffiti on porous stone masonry bridges, highlighting the delicate balance needed in cleaning techniques. With no complete eradication methods, there’s a call for novel, environmentally friendly techniques for porous materials. Stone masonry arch bridges, like Kozija ćuprija, exemplify sustainability with durability, low maintenance, cultural significance, and adaptability. The study aligns with UNESCO’s Agenda 2030, recommending cleaning procedures that leverage diverse methods for sustainable cultural heritage preservation in the context of building sustainable cities.
