Early Industrial Landscapes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

This paper delves into the industrial development of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian rule, with a specific focus on the cities of Sarajevo and Tuzla. Through the analysis of historical sources, archival documentation, and the spatial distribution of industry, it identifies a visible pattern of industrial landscape development and highlights the cultural-historical significance of existing industrial sites. Spatial indicators of urban development in the late 19th century were influenced by both natural characteristics and socio-political factors. The lack of adequate protection of the cultural-historical heritage associated with industrial growth leads to the endangerment of remaining material remnants. Regrettably, urban planning trends frequently neglect the significance of industrial sites in city development. Hence, this paper underscores the critical importance of comprehending and conserving industrial heritage for the structural integrity of settlements and the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
