Innovation in Clinical Care: Case Studies from Contemporary Cardiac Electrophysiology

This chapter reviews several clinical cases in cardiac electrophysiology. In general, there are numerous international society specified guidelines regarding treatments once a diagnosis is made. However, as patient care in cardiac electrophysiology is often complex, several studies are frequently required prior to making a diagnosis. Despite the existence of extensive guidelines, physicians often have to make decisions based upon unique patient characteristics, comorbidities, underlying pathologies, and the patient’s personal preferences. The goal of this chapter is to present a variety of interesting cases that were either technically complex or had unique patient characteristics affecting clinical management. The intended audience for this chapter is for those within medicine who do not regularly participate in direct clinical care (i.e., scientists and engineers) to demonstrate the variety of patient care and range of innovative solutions that can be achieved in clinical cardiac electrophysiology.
