Optical Mapping and Calcium Imaging

This chapter covers basic theories, principles, and applications of optical mapping of transmembrane potentials and intracellular calcium imaging in multicellular preparations. Noteworthy, calcium plays a central role in both electrical and mechanical functions of excitable tissue and serves as an important player in many biochemical and biophysical cellular regulatory functions. Emphasis will be placed on practical applications, advantages, and limitations of such techniques.
