Second Pillar: Communication of Idioms and Historic Interpretation of the Cry

This chapter which forms the second pillar of my argument, explores the communication of idioms as the theological underpinning of the exegesis, specifically what it means for God the Son incarnate to utter these words. Primary attention is given to Cyril of Alexandria, John of Damascus and Augustine of Hippo. The argument is made that the Patristic communication of idioms is inherited, via Scholasticism, by the Catholic and Reformed traditions, not by the Lutheran communicatio naturarum. The chapter concludes by defending the apparent novelty of my interpretation of the cry of dereliction and emphasising its alignment with Patristic voices.
