Noise-aware simulation of quantum circuits on classical hardware is an important task for understanding, developing, and evaluating quantum algorithms. However, considering noise effects during quantum circuit simulation makes an already exponentially hard problem even more complex—severely limiting corresponding approaches. Decision diagrams are a promising tool to tackle this complexity, as they offer a compact data structure for representing quantum functionality that is often below the exponential size of a straightforward representation. Although originally developed to solve (exponential) problems in the world of classical design automation, they have since proven their usefulness for solving design tasks in the quantum world as well. Thus far, however, their potential for noise-aware quantum circuit simulation remained largely unexplored. This was changed with this book, which comprehensively explores the potential of decision diagrams for noise-aware quantum circuit simulation.
