Territorial Corruption

The territorial system of the later nineteenth century witnessed much political corruption. This corruption arose in large part because of the way in which the system was administered by distant federal officials. Consequently, the territorial residents had little control over the somewhat unaccountable federal appointees. In Dakota Territory, and with respect to the Dakota Southern railroad, political corruption spawned by the territorial system would have a significant impact.
